The Elk County Conservation District is making its way to Hollywood!
Every year, the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. (PACD) hosts a video contest where districts across the PA Commonwealth can submit education videos for a target audience.
In 2024, we were fortunate enough to be given 14 paper pondshell mussels. They are currently living in two fish tanks, and they have taken on the role of being our office mascots! At the start, we didn't know much about freshwater mussels either, so we took a deep dive into learning more about them.
You may think, "What's so great about a couple mussels. They don't do much." On the contrary, mussels are always hard at work cleaning and acting as stream filters. They are also an indicator species because they act as a sign of a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Did you know, they can live up to 100 years!

There is so much to learn about these lesser-known critters that live at the bottom of our waterways. That's why our video is titled, "Freshwater Mussels" and is an educational video about (you guessed it) freshwater mussels. We compiled all sorts of neat facts and other information into our short film. We are hoping that people will come to know more about these bivalves and why they are so important to our environments. So, we took the time to test our skills of film making, special effects, humor, and even a bit of A.I. With that said, please sit back, relax, and enjoy watching "Freshwater Mussels"!!!
